Wild-Men

Wild Men and Local Hermits

The term “Bigfoot” is believed to have first been used in the Humboldt Times, a newspaper in Northern California in 1958.

Prior and subsequent to its first usage in 1958, any number of terms have been used to describe a big, hairy, unknown creature roaming the area.

These terms include Native American words, such as “Sasquatch” and “Wendigo”, local regional terms (“Stick Indians”, “Booger”, “Grass Man”, “Jersey Devil” etc.) and descriptive names, based on the appearance and behavior of a local entity.

Various New Jersey, pre-1960, newspaper archives contain a number of articles that reference a “Wild Man” or “Hairy Man” and similar variations.

In some instances, the local “Wild Man” referred to is clearly a human being that is likely a hermit or otherwise lives away from others.

Other actual human “Wild” men include mentally disturbed people and/or people who look unkempt and engage in anti-social behavior, such as assault, theft, and harassing others.

In other instances, the articles description of the local “Wild Man” is similar to accounts of Bigfoot type behaviors either in appearance or behavior or both.

This page includes clippings from New Jersey newspaper articles that describe “Wild Men” that are not clearly “human” and that could be a Big Foot type creature.
